Vein Treatments

Leading Los Angeles Clinic Offering Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins and Many More Interventions

Sclerotherapy is just one of the convenient, rapid solutions we offer for painful, unsightly varicose veins. Following an appropriate assessment, a special compound (a sclerosing solution) is injected into the vein, guided by ultrasound. The sclerosing agent causes the blood in the vein to coagulate. Because the vein is damaged beyond repair, the body absorbs it naturally, resolving the problem. As the weeks go by, the vein gradually becomes less prominent until it disappears altogether. This procedure is minimally invasive and undertaken under local anesthetic. Taking less than an hour, patients can resume normal activities as soon as the procedure is complete, although should avoid driving immediately after the process. After the procedure, patients will need to wear a compression bandage and stocking to help the healing process. The results for sclerotherapy are usually good, although patients may need to have two or three courses of treatment to achieve complete vein removal.

Laser and Radio Frequency Ablation

One of the most advanced forms of treatment for spider veins and varicose veins, laser intervention provides a permanent solution that’s quick, relatively painless and minimally disruptive. At our Los Angeles practice, we use the advanced EVLT® Endovenous Laser Treatment, which we believe offers an effective intervention that’s relatively pain free. We also provide Covidien ablation. Both EVLT® use heat to collapse and close the vein, but whereas EVLT® relies on a laser, Covidien RF ablation uses thermal energy to achieve similar results. Following an ultrasound scan, a small laser fiber is passed through the vein, through which the laser will be advanced. The laser moves down the length of the vein, its heat causing the vein diameter to shrink redirecting the blood towards the normal functioning deep vein trunks. Over the next few weeks following the treatment, the vein will be safely removed and absorbed by the body. The treatment is performed under local anesthetics in the doctor’s office, rather than an operating room. Normally taking around 15-20 minutes, patients remain fully conscious throughout the procedure and are able to walk out as soon as it is complete. Following laser treatment, it is recommended but not mandatory to wear compression stockings for several days to maximize the chances of a successful result. This is a safe, effective procedure which results in a majority of patients seeing their troublesome veins disappear. Laser procedures may be suitable for both varicose vein and spider vein treatment.

Microphlebectomy for Varicose Veins

This varicose vein treatment involves the removal of a single vein through an extremely small incision. Once a local anesthetic has taken effect, one of our clinicians will make a tiny cut (around .025”) at the top of the vein, and then gently remove it. Stitches are usually unnecessary after the procedure – a butterfly strip is normally sufficient. Because the vein is removed completely, patients will see an almost immediate improvement. Once the procedure is complete, a compression bandage and stocking is applied which will be required to be worn for a while until healing has occurred. The procedure is a “walk in, walk out” one and usually takes less than an hour. Other than bruising around the site of the surgery, there are normally few other side effects. Microphlebectomy for varicose veins is a permanent procedure – once the vein is removed, it won’t grow back. The blood previously carried by the vein will simply be rerouted to other veins. Many patients see an instant improvement in the appearance of the affected area, as well as enjoy a reduction in the discomfort which the vein has been causing, as soon as the treatment is completed.

Los Angeles Based Compression Therapy for Varicose Veins

There are a significant number of patients for whom even minimal varicose vein treatment isn’t suitable. Many older patients, those with reduced mobility, pre-existing medical conditions or venous insufficiency may not be suitable candidates for laser surgery or sclerotherapy. For those individuals, compression therapy can bring significant relief from the discomfort that varicose veins can cause. Although not a cure, compression therapy provides effective, conservative management of a wide range of venous conditions. Patients will need to wear a suitable compression stocking continuously during their waking hours. Stockings are available in varying sizes, lengths and degrees of elasticity, enabling the treatment to be tailored to individual requirements. Often used as an aid to recovery after one of our other procedures, compression therapy can also be used on its own to manage varicose veins for as long as required. Compression therapy is extremely safe and gives instant results. It’s an ideal first step in treating a venous condition, frequently as a precursor to a more permanent procedure.
